Difference

Proper Tools is a small consultancy built on the belief that clear thinking requires perspective.

Many of the characteristics people most visibly identify with — culture, language, faith, ethnicity, gender, political tradition, social class of origin — are not chosen. They are inherited, encountered, or shaped by circumstance.

They are not hiring criteria.

They are not disqualifiers.

We do not hire because of identity categories.
We do not exclude because of them.

What we do seek is difference — especially difference that sharpens reasoning. Coherence needs room to disagree.

Why Difference Matters

Human brilliance is often overlooked when it arrives in locally unfamiliar packaging.

History is full of people who were underestimated because they did not resemble the dominant norm — in accent, background, temperament, or worldview. Difference is not a problem to be managed. It is a resource to be cultivated.

Proper Tools values people with a sharp edge.

We look for:

  • People who think differently.
  • People who notice what others overlook.
  • People who challenge assumptions without cruelty.
  • People who combine rigor with humor.
  • People who are respectful, funny, exquisite, and kind.

Difference, for us, is not a numbers exercise.
It is an epistemic discipline.

If everyone in the room agrees too quickly, the room is not doing its job.

How We Hire

We hire for:

  • Intellectual integrity
  • Courageous thinking
  • Respectful disagreement
  • Craft
  • Curiosity

We actively welcome people whose experiences, perspectives, or training differ from our own — because difference strengthens resilience.

Your background is not a liability here.

It is not a quota either.

It is simply part of who you are.

A Note on Belonging

Proper Tools is committed to treating people with dignity.

Brilliance can appear in unexpected forms.
We aim to notice it.

If you are thoughtful, capable, and inclined toward building rather than breaking — you are welcome. Resilience is built at the margins.
